After one day at Augusta, Sergio Garcia and Marc Leishman are leading the pack at six-under-par 66. Leishman missed the cut the only time he appeared the Masters, and Garcia said he wasn't good enough to win the Masters after posting a 75 in the third round last year.
As you can see from the leaderboard, there were some other surprises that made their way into the top 10 on Thursday, including David Lynn and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano.
There were also some high-profile names, including Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, 2008 champion Trevor Immelman, 1992 champion Fred Couples, Matt Kuchar, Jim Furyk, 2007 champion Zach Johnson and Adam Scott.
Tiger Woods, the favorite in the tournament, is still well within range, however. He posted a two-under 70 on Thursday, notching three birdies along the way.
According to Masters.com, he was better than the field average in driving accuracy and greens-in-regulation percentage. He also putted reasonably well, with no three-putts on the day.
Phil Mickelson—who managed a one-under 71—struggled from the start on Thursday, but got in a groove down the stretch. He posted three bogeys in his first seven holes, but notched four birdies in his last seven holes. Expect the three-time Masters champion to start out hot on Friday.
As for Rory McIlroy, the 23-year-old was all over the place on Thursday en route to even par. He had five birdies on the day, but he also posted five bogeys. He struggled mightily with his putting game, averaging 1.78 putts per hole (the field average was 1.64). That included two three-putts on the day.
One of the biggest stories on Thursday surrounded a golfer who posted a one-over 73. That's because said golfer was Tianlang Guan. The 14-year-old, who just happened to be the youngest player ever to appear at the Masters, made some incredible putts, especially considering his age.
The winner of the 2013 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship averaged 1.39 putts per hole, tied for second in the field.
Here's a look at some notable pairings on Friday, complete with tee times (via Masters.com). Jason Day, Rickie Fowler and Padraig Harrington finish off the day.
