MANCHESTER UNITED EYEING UP £20M BID FOR PORTO DEFENDER ... - Daily Star

MANCHESTER UNITED have started the search for Rio Ferdinand's successor with Porto's Eliaquim Mangala emerging as a top target.

United have Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling to pick from but manager Sir Alex Ferguson is mindful that Vidic is also 32 this year and has had injury issues too.

Significantly, midfielder Anderson is wanted by Porto on loan, raising the chances of some type of swap deal while Corinthians also fancy the player in a loan exchange.

United are eyeing another centre-back in Portugal, too, Benfica's Ezequiel Garay, 26, as well as tracking Mangala's Porto team-mate, Colombian James Rodriguez, 21.

Ferguson will have Wilfried Zaha, 20, at his disposal next season but the fact he has his scouts eyeing another winger puts the futures of Nani, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young in some doubt.

"I get the odd twinge from the last injury to my leg, which has affected my progress slightly. But that isn't to say I haven't enjoyed the season, though, because I have.

"I admire and learn from Ryan Giggs and Nani every day. They are great pros and players who work hard to become the best they can be.
