Sir Alex Ferguson 'shocked' at how easily Manchester United have cruised ... - Metro

United have a massive 15-point advantage at the top of the table and require just 13 points from their last nine matches to reclaim the Premier League from rivals Manchester City.

A win over Sunderland on Saturday would go some way towards that, helping United to an 18-point advantage before City take to the field against Newcastle later in the day.

But for Ferguson, whatever the result, he is still astonished at how easily United have been able to pull away from their rivals.

'With Manchester City coming on the scene in the last couple of years and Chelsea and Arsenal and Tottenham, you have teams vying for that top-four position.

'The first point was that, after last season, we wanted to make sure we didn't lose it on goal difference, and that has improved markedly.

The huge lead gives United a healthy advantage going into a mad period of matches, with Ferguson's side facing Chelsea on Bank Holiday Monday, two days after the Sunderland game, then hosting City one week later.

United know they need to keep a good balance of players to challenge on all fronts and Ferguson says he will be monitoring how much they play during the international break, with rotation in mind.

'It is a big ask for our squad and something we need to concentrate on because I need to make sure I pick the right team.'
