Wigan 0-4 Liverpool: Match report, pictures and video highlights ...

The upcoming home games against Newcastle and Norwich and trip to Loftus Road are more likely to bring points but Wigan need to raise their game soon.

Had an early chance been taken by Arouna Kone been taken things could have been different, but Liverpool led form the second minute and never looked like losing after that.

Brendan Rodgers' side cannot buy a win against top sides but maintained their impressive record against teams at the foot of the table.

Wigan should have gone ahead early on as Arouna Kone found space but failed to generate enough power to beat Pepe Reina.

And soon later Downing headed Wigan in front after new signing Philippe Coutinho skinned Emmerson Boyce and put in a clipped cross.

A poor backpass almost gifted Suarez a second which led to Boyce and James McArthur having to be pulled apart by their team-mates after a bust-up.

Suarez did not have to wait long for his second as his free-kick crept past Ali Al Habsi via a deflection off the wall and the upright.

When Wigan did manage to create opening they found the Kop keeper in top form as Franco Di Santo became the latest to be denied.

His opposite number pulled off a fine save just before the break after Boyce let Suarez pick up the ball 20 yard out.

Soon after the break Suarez effectively killed the game off as Glen Johnson scythed through the home defence and teed up the striker.

After netting the third Suarez lowered the tempo and Lthe rest of the side followed suit as the stands emptied and the game faded towards a conclusion.

The only consolation for Roberto Martinez will be Reading's defeat which at least keeps his side within range of their relegation rivals.

Liverpool, meanwhile, maintained their three point gap behind rivals Everton on the day Steven Gerrard started his 400th game for the club.
